VACANCY:  CHIEF ENGI​NEERING OFFICER
MARITIME SPECIAL PROJECTS, CAPE TOWN
FIXED TERM CONTRACT until 31 OCTOBER 2026

JOB PURPOSE
To provide shipboard technical and maintenance support to the fleet of vessels managed by Maritime Special Projects (MSP).
FUNCTION
  • Ensure the safe and correct running of main engine, auxiliary engines and all such primary/secondary equipment and systems, in accordance with manufacturers' instructions and in keeping with Company procedures.
  • Understand the parameters to ensure efficient maintenance and operation of engine plants, i.e. fuel efficiency, power analysis and systems heat balance.
  • Ensure that the engines are correctly tuned to achieve maximum fuel efficiency.
  • Monitor and optimize fuel consumption.
  • Monitor the bunker start-up and closing-down procedure whilst also providing all the necessary anti-pollution measures and remains back-up during the complete bunkering operation.
  • Ensure the vessel carries adequate stocks of stores, spares and lube oils with respect to maintenance and repair and is consistent with the Company requirements.
  • Supervise, control and verify the application and consumption of spare parts and stores.
  • Ensure that chemicals are used in a safe and responsible way and the least hazardous chemicals are used.
  • Recognise non-compliance with a specific requirement and analyse the reason for the non-compliance. Ensure personnel are aware of, the reason for the non-compliance and how same is to be permanently eliminated in future.
  • Develop the skills and confidence of his officers by providing on board training and explaining the relevant content of the following to all personnel:
o Company's SMS,
o Flag State legislation, codes and guidance, including reporting requirements.
o Port State legislation and guidance,
o Classification Societies' rules and regulations, including reporting requirements.
o Industry Guidelines.
  • Ensure efficient operation and maintenance of the vessel equipment.
  • Ensure planned maintenance system is updated.
  • Compliance with International Health & Safety regulations in particular MARPOL​

The ideal candidate
  • Be a South African citizen and holds a valid passport.
  • Holds a valid SAMSA Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Chief Engineering Officer STCW Reg III/2
  • At least 2 (two) years’ experience as a Second Engineering Officer STCW Reg. III/2 and/or 1 year as Chief Engineering Officer STCW Reg. III/2
  • Holds a valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (without restrictions or limitations).
  • Experience across various power plants
  • Technical and problem-solving skills, including technical report writing
  • Resolve environmental concerns and improve procedures relating to pollution prevention.
  • Realise the need for management systems and procedures, particularly in areas of emergency, malfunction safety back up, contingency planning and protection of the environment.
  • Personnel management and safety awareness
  • Is fluent in written and spoken command of the English language.
  • Able to follow Company instructions and procedures.
  • Able to deliver results and meet client expectations.
  • A team player with a professional work ethic, managing a team on-board and work closely with management.
  • Will comply to strict company and industry SHEQ standards and working habits.
  • Has no criminal record with the SAPS (South African Police Service) Criminal Record Center.
  • Comply with the requirements of the Merchant Shipping Act (MSA) , MLC (Maritime Labour Act) and STCW (Standards for Certification, Training, Certification and Watchkeeping).
  • Comply with a strict zero tolerance Alcohol & Drug Policy
  • Comply with the requirements of the POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act)
  • Comply with the company confidentiality requirements.
  • Comply to the provisions of the Marine Living Resources Act (MLRA) 18 of 1998
