South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) was established in terms of the SAMSA Act 5 of 1998.  It is tasked with the mandate of ensuring the safety of life and property at sea, preventing and combating pollution of the marine environment by ships and the promotion of South Africa’s maritime interest.

The Purpose

The programme provides opportunities to unemployed graduates to gain meaningful experience that will complement their studies and gain access to the labour market.                                      

DURATION: 12 MONTHS  
CRITERIA

To qualify for the internship programme you must be:

·         Unemployed graduate aged between 20 to 35

·         Have completed a Degree or a National Diploma ( NQF level 6)

·         Be a South African citizen

·         Not have participated previously in an internship programme

The above position will report to Principal Officer

JOB PURPOSE

To ensure vessels, seafarers and maritime service providers are compliant with local legislation and maritime conventions to give effect to the objectives of SAMSA.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  1. Marine Surveying: Undertake surveys in accordance with legislation and other regulations relating to marine pollution and safety. Survey report writing.
  2. Engineering Examinations and Accreditations: Draft exam papers; conduct level 3 assessments; accredit medical practitioners, training courses and training institutions 
  3. Legislation/Regulations: Initiate and participate in the drafting of new legislation and amendments to existing legislation
  4. Casualty/Incident Investigations: Undertake and report on casualty/ incident investigations as well as make recommendations based on the outcome of the investigation
  5. Technical Consultancy: Assist with the interpretation of legislation and provide professional advice as and when required.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  1. Second Engineer >3000 kW STCW Certificate of Competency (COC), having completed the required sea service for a Chief Engineer >3000 kW COC and the required academics.
  2. STCW ancillary courses and any other equivalent training
  3. Sailed in rank of Second Engineer (seagoing experience)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Chief Engineer >3000 kW Certificate of Competency or
  2. Equivalent Marine Engineering Degree
  3. STCW ancillary courses
  4. Sailed in rank of Chief Engineer (seagoing experience)
