Through SAMSA’s Employee Volunteerism Initiative, the organisation decided to mark the 2014 International Mandela Day by allowing all of its nine regions to submit CSI related projets in their communities for consideration to the SAMSA’s Corporate Social Investment department.
After an overwhelming response 4 projects from across all the SAMSA regions where carefully selected. The projects embody the focus areas around which Mandela Day s based, the projects cover food security,education and literacy, shelter and infrastructure and service and volunteerism.
Below are the chosen projects:
- Gauteng- Eersturust Child Welfare
SAMSA fixed doors and replaced all the door handles, procured a fridge-freezer, microwave and installed a geyser.
- Durban -Ntobeko Nursery School
This is a crèche situated in Kwambonambi, 45 minutes from Richardsbay. SAMSA provided 62 mattresses, 62 blankets and sponsored equipment for the outdoor play area. SAMSA will further communicate with an organization called Habit for Humanity to see if we can get an additional room built for the nursery.
- Port Elizabeth Region- Community Neigbourhood watch
This community watch organisation within Motherwell has requested 201 school shoes, 201 water bottles and lunch boxes for three primary schools.
- Doringbaai Community
This a project that was long planned by Ms Nolundi Dubasi based in CapeTown office. This is a fishing community and one of the problems is the high levels of substance abuse. SAMSA will be handing over a full soccer kit.
