The Merchant Shipping (Eyesight and Medical Examination) Regulations, 2004, as amended (Regulations), requires that the determination of fitness for seafarers shall be in accordance with the Guidelines published in the SAMSA Code. These guidelines, therefore, must be applied to all seafarers being assessed for service on seagoing ships, except in cases of vessels that are defined as Small Vessels in accordance with the Merchant Shipping Act, 1951, as amended (the Act) where the guidance is contained in the Small Vessel Code

The 'GOP-538.01 – The Maritime Medical Standards Code' provides the standards, in guidance form, which must be applied to all seafarers, except where specific exceptions are made in the Act, Regulations, in the SAMSA Code or elsewhere as may be applicable.

Medical Examiners approved by SAMSA shall at all times, when examining seafarers, use these guidelines to determine the fitness of the candidate.

Provides the mandatory Standards of Medical fitness required for Seafarers. The standards are applied by SAMSA Approved Medical Practitioners.
